Yesterday, having won the toss and elected to bat first, the hosts had reached seven without loss before Palladino (pictured below celebrating his hat-trick) struck in a devastating spell of bowling.

Michael Thornely was first to go, trapped LBW for six before the in-form Ned Eckersley was caught at the wicket first ball.

With Palladino on a hattrick, his opponent couldn’t have been much tougher as Ramnaresh Sarwan strode to the crease.

However the experienced West Indies international had no answer; Palladino sending his off stump cartwheeling out the ground to cue mass celebration in the Derbyshire ranks; Leicestershire 7-3.

Matthew Boyce and Josh Cobb then set about rebuilding the Leicestershire innings however Derbyshire struck again with Cobb caught at the wicket off Jon Clare for 30.

With no further wickets in the session, Leicestershire reached 84-4 at Lunch with Boyce unbeaten on 42 and Greg Smith unbeaten on five.

Post Lunch, Boyce secured his 50 however the 26-year-old failed to add to his score upon completing the landmark, becoming the first of five victims for Groenewald.

Smith (9) and former Derbyshire man Wayne White (5) then fell in quick succession to Groenewald and Clare respectively to leave the hosts in real trouble at 111-7.

The Leicestershire innings then received some much needed impetus as Kadeer Ali and Nathan Buck saw their side through to Tea without any further damage.

Derbyshire, however, we ruthless in the evening session and the dismissals of Buck (13) and Nadeem Malik (6), both caught Wes Durston and bowled Groenewald, saw Leicestershire struggling to obtain their first batting point.

Kadeer Ali had played a defiant innings but when he edged behind to Tom Poynton for 48 Leicestershire were all out for 177 and Groenewald had his fifth wicket.

For the visitors, Tim Grornewald (5-29), Tony Palladino (3-58) and Jon Clare (2-18) were all impressive.

With dark clouds looming, only three overs were possible in the reply, Derbyshire reaching 5-0 after three overs before the rain ensured play was curtailed for the day.

Matt Lineker and Chesney Hughes will resume in the morning on 0* and 4* respectively as Derbyshire look to build on a hugely impressive opening day atGrace Road.

Inside Edge: 'Great bowling and catching today to bounce back from Bristol and the day was nicely set up by Palladino's hattrick!' - Tim Groenewald
