The Derbyshire Summer School Games at the County Ground on Thursday was hailed a resounding success, despite the adverse weather conditions.
The day saw around 300 school children from across the region including Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derby, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, High Peak, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire.
The Opening Ceremony was well received at 10:30am in the Sports Hall in the Gateway Centre with competitions taking place in a variety of locations across the County Ground before the Closing Ceremony at 3pm.
The competitions themselves saw a wide variety of sports from athletics, golf, netball, rounders, tennis.
There were many additional activities throughout the afternoon to keep spectators and competitors entertained from cheerleading from Derbyshire’s very own Falconettes to music, dance, drama and sports demonstrations.
The Games were an excellent showcase of sport and talent within the region’s schools and follows on from the Derbyshire Winter School Games earlier this year.
There were plenty of winning schools from all the various competitions but special congratulations to North East Derbyshire; who were the overall winners of the competition.
Derbyshire County Competition Officer Craig Homer said: “My congratulations go to all the young people who took part in the Derbyshire Summer School Games. Despite the wet weather it was a fantastic event and it was great to see so many young people competing and taking part in the organisation and officiating in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Derbyshire Sport – organisers of the event – later tweeted ‘Many thanks to all at the County Ground. At Derbyshire CCC, a fantastic venue for the Derbyshire School Games.’
