Ross Whiteley and Mark Footitt starred with bat and ball respectively as Derbyshire drew with South Africa.
Whiteley's unbeaten 51 proved a highlight of Derbyshire's 1st innings reply early on Day Two, whilst Footitt then impressed; claiming four South African 2nd innings wickets.
Resuming on 75-1, Derbyshire lost overnight batsmen Wayne Madsen (29) and Usman Khawaja (37)early in the morning session.
There was then a knock of 20 from Dan Redfern before Jon Clare (4), Tom Poynton (0), Alex Hughes (4), Peter Burgoyne (1) and Matt Higginbottom (4) fell in quick succession to a Lonwabo Tsotsobe inspired South Africa; the fast bowler taking figures of 4-45.
However the highlight of the Derbyshire inning was Whiteley’s knock of 51* from just 63 balls, including six fours and three sixes as the hosts declared on 174; giving the tourists a first innings lead of 191.
A much-changed South African batting line-up then slumped to 68-6 with Footitt in fine form, claiming 4-38 including the wickets of Faf du Plessis (4), former Derbyshire player Robin Peterson (11) and Morne Morkel (0).
Post tea, Vernon Philander (68*) and Dale Steyn (34) treated the crowd to some big hitting as the tourists reached 168-7 at 4:50pm, at which point both teams shook hands on a draw; both Derbyshire and South Africa getting a valuable workout ahead of important matches next week against Yorkshire and England respectively.
