Yorkshire v Derbyshire Live Scorecard/Day Three Report

Wes Durston hit 84 as Derbyshire battled hard to avoid the follow on on Day Three at Headingley.

Resuming on 28-1, the visitors found themselves in all kinds of trouble at 42-4 before a rearguard action saw Derbyshire fight back.

Derbyshire will resume in the morning on 233-8, requiring a further 38 runs to avoid the follow on on the final day.

Having lost Wayne Madsen to the final ball of the day on Thursday evening, the situation quickly became worse for Derbyshire as Usman Khawaja fell to a stunning catch behind by Andy Hodd off former England bowler Ryan Sidebottom for three.

Sidebottom and Hodd then combined on a further two occasions to account for Matt Lineker (14) and Dan Redfern (3) as the visitors slumped to a precarious 42-4 with the follow on target of 271 looking a long way away.

However Wes Durston and Ross Whiteley then led the Derbyshire fight-back, the former hitting 50 from just 66 balls as the Division Two leaders reached 98-4 at Lunch.

Under dark skies, both batsmen carried on where they left off in the afternoon session; Durston pulling England’s Tim Bresman for four to bring up a crucial 100 run partnership.

The pair then brought up the 150 as Derbyshire looked to negotiate themselves out of trouble and closer to the follow on target.

However Durston’s fine knock ended shortly after, bowled by former Derbyshire loanee Azeem Rafiq for 84; the visitors 154-5.

The rain that had threatened for the majority of the session then brought about an early Tea and ensured a lengthy delay with Derbyshire 163-5; the resolute Whiteley 29* and Wainwright 7*.

When play resumed at 5pm, Derbyshire lost Whiteley - caught behind off Steven Patterson for 35 - before Wainwight and Tom Poynton enjoyed a 51 partnership before the latter was LBW to Rafiq for 25.

Tony Palladino then fell first ball - LBW to Rashid - and once again the 271 follow on target seemed a long way away.

A defiant Wainwright (45*) and Tim Groenewald (0*) then negotiated the final few overs, with Derbyshire moving into the final day requiring a further 38 runs to avoid the follow on.
