Derbyshire top of the table with a game to go despite defeat

Usman KhawajaDerbyshire’s LV= County Championship destiny remains in their own hands despite a 222-run defeat versus Kent at Canterbury today.

Karl Krikken’s men will enter the game versus Hampshire at the County Ground, Derby, next week (Tuesday to Friday, 10.30am) knowing victory will almost certainly secure promotion.

The current league standings see Derbyshire top of the table; one point clear of second placed Yorkshire and six points clear of third placed Kent.

Kent play Glamorgan in their final game starting on Tuesday, Yorkshire face Essex. Two of the current top three will secure promotion.

Usman Khawaja’s (pictured) patient 51 provided the mainstay of Derbyshire’s backs-to-the-wall effort after the home side set them a notional 404 to win.

But, despite lower-order resistance from David Wainwright (21 off 77 balls) and Tom Poynton (27 not out off 122 balls), Derbyshire were all out for 181 with 11.4 overs remaining in the day.

The seam duo of Matt Coles (3 for 29) and Darren Stevens (4 for 37) did most of the damage for the home side.
