Derbyshire’s Ross Whiteley has been called-up to represent England in the upcoming Hong Kong sixes tournament.
Selection caps a fantastic week for the 24-year-old after helping secure the LV= County Championship Second Division for his county.
The Academy graduate all-rounder has been included in England’s seven man squad for the competition at the Kowloon Cricket Club in Honk Kong on 27th and 28th October.
The squad in full is as follows:
Josh Cobb (Leicestershire) – Captain
Ross Whiteley (Derbyshire)
Adam Ball (Kent)
Keith Barker (Warwickshire)
Ben Brown (Sussex)
Chris Nash (Sussex)
Tom Smith (Lancashire)
Andy Hurry – (Somerset) Manager
Whiteley said: “Winning the league with Derbyshire and gaining my first senior England call-up are both career highlights and they’ve come in the space of a few days.
“The feeling of relief and excitement when everything was over and we had finally won the Championship was overwhelming. The boys have worked tirelessly all season and I'm proud to be part of this team.
“To receive a call from Geoff Miller telling me I was selected for the Honk Kong Sixes side so soon afterwards was unbelievable. I still don't think everything has sunk in. It truly has been a whirlwind last seven days.
“Some great English players, as well as some legends from all over the world, have played in this event and to be part of the 2012 tournament is something I’ll always cherish.
“I've always dreamed about representing my country and I hope this is just the start of things to come.”
England have been drawn in a group featuring the hosts; Hong Kong, as well as South Africa and Australia as Josh Cobb’s side bid to become the most successful competing nation in the history of the tournament by winning it for an unprecedented sixth time.
Derbyshire Head Coach Karl Krikken added: "Ross's selection for England highlights exactly what this Club now stands for and is looking to achieve; bringing home grown, English qualified players through our Academy system, into the professional game and hopefully into the England setup.”
