Derbyshire’s Chesney Hughes put in a Man of the Match performance as Anguilla lifted the NAGICO Leeward Islands 50 over tournament on Sunday.
Having gone into the match as underdogs, Anguilla’s dramatic victory saw them pick up a cheque for $10,000 after beating the strongly fancied Antigua and Barbuda by two wickets in front of a big crowd at the Caribe Lumber Ballpark.
Facing the eight-time winners of the tournament, Anguilla lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, Antigua and Barbuda posting 273-9; Hughes the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-51 from 10 overs.
In reply, Anguilla knocked off the runs for the loss of eight wickets and with four balls to spare with Hughes, Derbyshire’s 2010 Player of the Year, contributing an important knock of 54 from 47 deliveries, including four fours and three sixes.
In contrast to their opponents, it was the first time that Anguilla have lifted the NAGICO Leeward Islands 50 over Trophy.
Hughes told derbyshireccc.com ‘I'm very pleased and proud of the boys for the victory. It's the first time Anguilla have won the tournament and it was fitting with the overwhelming support we had from the Anguillian community in St Marten.
'Antigua are a good team and have always dominated the tournament. On the day they had five guys with international experience to our none, so it really took a a special effort.
'The welcome we had on our return showed what it meant to everyone on the island as we were welcomed home as heroes.'
