Derbyshire name squad for season opener

2013SquadDerbyshire have named their squad for the LV= County Championship 2013 season opener against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, beginning on Wednesday.

World number two Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who arrived in the UK on Saturday and scored an unbeaten 31 in the side’s friendly with Nottinghamshire on Monday, has been included in the 13-man squad.

All-rounder Ross Whiteley is looking forward to the challenge of Division One cricket, but is expecting a difficult opening game against the current LV= CC champions Warwickshire.

“I am really looking forward to the first game of the season and the new challenge of Division One cricket,” he said. “It is great to start the season at a Test venue and we as a squad are really excited about the new campaign.

“We are expecting a difficult opening game as we are facing the reigning champions, but we are looking forward to it. We had a good pre-season against them, beat them in the t20 in Barbados, and now hoping to take this forward and perform well in the four-day competition.

“The boys are itching to get out now and hit the ground running.  Personally, I am hoping to have a positive effect with both bat and ball this season.

“My bowling is something that I have been working and it is something I can still improve on, but I think I can have an impact with ball in hand. I am also hoping to nail down my spot at number six in the batting line-up and help contribute as much as possible.”

Warwickshire XI: Chopra, Westwood, Porterfield, Troughton, Evans, Ambrose, Clarke, Milnes, Patel, Wright, Hannon-Dalby

Derbyshire’s 13-man squad: Madsen, Godleman, Hughes, Chanderpaul, Durston, Redfern, Whiteley, Wainwright, Poynton, Clare, Palladino, Groenewald, Turner
