Rain frustrates Derbyshire on Day 3 at Edgbaston

EdgbastonOnly 24 overs were possible on Day 3 as rain continued to frustrate Derbyshire in their opening LV= County Championship Division One tie against Warwickshire.

Groundstaff worked tireless throughout the day adding and removing the Edgbaston covers on several occasions, but it was ultimately in vain as only 144 balls were bowled on the penultimate day as Warwickshire closed on 90-0.

After an inspection, play began at 3.30pm and Tim Groenewald continued his spell alongside strike partner Tony Palladino, who was still on a high from his 68 on Day 1.

Groenewald almost claimed the wicket of Varun Chopra in the third over of the day, but his miss-timed shot was dropped by Ross Whiteley.

Derbyshire couldn’t find the breakthrough before the rain returned as the players left the field after just 22 minutes of play with Warwickshire on 25-0.

The rain again eventually subsided and play re-started at 4.45pm, as both Chopra and Ian Westwood continued to keep the Derbyshire attack at bay.

There wasn’t much in the pitch for the Derbyshire bowlers to exploit as Warwickshire safely navigated the opening 10 overs of the day, moving onto 50-0.

After another brief interval, the umpires finally called an end to the day's play at 6.40pm after only 24 overs in total were completed on Day 3. The day's play had given Warwickshire enough time to move on to 90-0, with both Chopra and Westwood unbeaten on 48 and 31 respectively, trailing Derbyshire by 136.
