Rain frustrates Derbyshire in Yorkshire Bank 40 opener

DerbyOnly three overs were possible in Derbyshire’s opening Yorkshire Bank 40 fixture of the season against Lancashire due to persistent rain at the County Ground.

Chesney Hughes (4*) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (5*) faced just 18 balls before the rain arrived and ultimately forced an early closure to play, as the Falcons had to settle for a point in their opening one-day match of 2013.

Lancashire won the toss and elected to field first, but both Hughes and Chanderpaul looked composed at the crease, with the latter hitting the only boundary of the match through vacant square-leg off Kyle Hogg.

But to the disappointment of the home crowd, no further play was possible as the rain returned for the remainder of the day as the match finished in a No Result.

Speaking after the game, Alasdair Evans said: "It was bitterly disappointing that the weather beat us today. We have been looking forward to some one day stuff for a while and especially having the Sky Sports cameras here it is a shame that the British summer has beaten us today.

"But we now concentrate on the Sussex match this week and we are all desperate to claim our first win in the four-day format.

"After claiming just a point today, hopefully we can get a good result against Scottish Saltires in our next YB40 fixture. We need to try and get some momentum in this competition. These competitions are all about gaining momentum and taking it through the summer so hopefully we can get an early win under our belt and kick on from there."

Derbyshire will now begin their preparations for next week’s LV= County Championship fixture against Sussex on May 15th at the County Ground, before they continue their YB40 campaign against Scottish Saltires on Sunday, 20th June at Edinburgh.

Supporters who attended today's game can use their ticket again to gain entrance to any home match this season (except for all-ticket matches). Alternatively a full refund can be claimed by applying in writing to the ticket office enclosing your ticket, name and address. All information about Derbyshire's rain check policy are printed on the back of your match-day ticket.
