Alex Hughes hails great team performance

AlexHughesAlex Hughes was delighted with his match-winning contribution against Essex at Leek on Sunday and believes the win can be a platform as they push for a semi-final berth.

The 21-year-old produced an excellent all-round performance, hitting 59 from 36 balls and taking three wickets as Derbyshire won by 63 runs in the Yorkshire Bank 40 Group B clash.

Hughes was pleased with his personal performance, but insists that it was a great team display that allowed the Falcons secure their second win of this year’s competition.

“It was a good win by the lads and everyone played their part,” Hughes said. “We were up against a strong Essex side but we all did our jobs and I think our performance deserved the win.

“I was excited for the match. I come from Staffordshire so I have played here a few times and I knew it was a nice ground. I have really enjoyed playing at Leek in the past.

“It was a beautiful track. When you go out to bat on some days it comes off for you and it did for me. You have to cherish these moments - and to hit the last ball off Napier for six was a good feeling.

“I think scores can be difficult to defend at that ground. They have got some great players - international quality players - so we knew that we had to keep chipping away and take wickets at regular intervals to give ourselves a chance and we did that.

“It was enjoyable to play against these players and it was a good challenge for me. When given the ball you just have to back yourself, back your slower balls and hopefully it will come right for you. If you do these things more than often then the right things will come out – and again it did for me.

“Hopefully this win, our second in the competition, will now give us the momentum as we continue to move forward in the tournament.”
