Wayne Madsen praised the contributions from the Cricket Derbyshire University of Derby Academy graduates after Derbyshire's maiden LV= County Championship win of the season against Sussex over the weekend.
Karl Krikken’s side romped to a nine-wicket win inside three days at Hove, securing the county’s first victory in the top flight of the County Championship for more than a decade.
Five Cricket Derbyshire University of Derby Academy graduates - Tom Poynton, Alex Hughes, Matt Higginbottom, Peter Burgoyne and Ben Slater - featured in the win, and Captain Madsen was delighted with their key match-winning contributions.
“The Academy players were huge for us during the game,” Madsen said. “The guys took crucial wickets and scored runs at crucial times and to have five of the guys who came through the academy system was just fantastic for us.
“We played really well over the three days; the team, coaching staff and everyone were delighted. We are all very proud.
“We travelled down to Sussex with quite a young squad and the performance we put in was magnificent.
“We have had a tough season so far, especially in the four-day competition, and I am extremely proud of the guys and how we performed. On Day Three especially as we were brilliant with the ball and then we really saw it home well with the bat.
“It is an area we haven’t really performed to our ability this season, and to chase the score down in the way we did was extremely pleasing.
“We have shown glimpses all the way through this season and we have competed in games, but there has been stages and sessions when we just haven’t put things together, performed poorly and that’s cost us.
“We had proven ourselves last season by getting promotion and it was just a matter of time before we strung a performance together this year and I believe this will give us a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.”
