Derbyshire County Cricket Club is welcoming a new era of corporate governance after crucial proposals for reform gained 96% of the Members’ Vote.
Following a month of voting, the result of the ballot on comprehensive changes including a skilled Supervisory Board of six was announced at a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Wednesday 27th March 2013. The proposal, which required a 66% majority, received 614 votes in favour with just 26 against.
As a result, the previous 15-person committee has been disbanded in favour of a Supervisory Board of six and the offices of Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and Vice-Chairman are deleted.
A new set of Club Rules have been approved which incorporate specific roles, responsibilities and experience for those serving on the Board.
Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire since May 14th 2009, Willie Tucker, has been appointed President of Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
The former Midlands Cooperative Society Chief Executive was appointed at the Club’s AGM on Wednesday, March 27th and will serve a one year term until March 2014.
Willie Tucker (pictured above alongside Chairman Chris Grant during a recent visit to the County Ground) was born in Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, in 1945, but has lived in Derbyshire for around 40 years, the last 20 in the village of Aston-on-Trent.
His career spanned 45 years with the Co-operative Movement, serving as Midlands Cooperative Society Chief Executive up to the date of his retirement in July 2005.
After enjoying a successful winter in Zimbabwe, all-rounder Peter Burgoyne is now hoping to break into Karl Krikken’s four-day side in 2013, as the Falcons continue their preparations for the new season.
The squad returned from their preseason tour to Barbados at the weekend and are now preparing for their three-day friendly at Taunton on Monday.
Burgoyne, who played two CB40 games for Derbyshire last season, completed two first-class centuries while in Zimbabwe playing for Southern Rocks
The 19-year-old has been impressed with the side’s work ethic during preseason, and he is now hoping that his time abroad can aid his quest to gain more first team action in 2013.
Members are reminded that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place in The Gateway, Derby at 7.30pm this evening (Wednesday 27th March 2013).
As soon as the AGM closes, a Special General Meeting (SGM) will be convened at which the eagerly-awaited results of the governance ballot will be announced.
Both meetings are strictly limited to Members only and The Gateway will be open from 7pm to facilitate early arrivals.
Supporters will get the opportunity to watch some of their favourite England stars in action at the County Ground in 2013.
The ECB have announced that England’s twenty20 captain Stuart Broad and all-rounder Samit Patel are both available for Nottinghamshire’s LV= County Championship clash at the County Ground on April 24th.
Derbyshire’s fixture with Notts will be the Falcons’ first home game of the 2013 season and will be the Club’s first home fixture in the top flight of the LV= County Championship structure for 13 years.
Karl Krikken’s side begin their 2013 campaign away to current champions Warwickshire and the Bears will be without England batting duo Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott who have both been declared unavailable.
But paceman Chris Woakes, who has played eight ODIs for England, is available for the Edgbaston clash.
Steven Finn has been declared available for Middlesex when Derbyshire travel to Lord’s on April 17th, while all-rounder Joe Root is also set to square-up against the Falcons at Headingley Carnegie on April 29th, both in the LV=CC.

More good news for beer drinkers this week following the recent budget as a new house beer will be added to the line-up in our Members’ Lounge in 2013.
The additional beer, brewed exclusively by brewery partner Greene King, means Members in the Lund Pavilion will be able to choose from the official Falcon's beer, Old Speckled Hen - a traditional, full strength golden ale with an original gravity of 4.5% - and a new lighter ale with an original gravity of 3.2%.
The new house beer will be priced at just £2.95 and will be initially available for a trial period until the end of May in the Members’ Lounge in the Lund Pavilion.
Derbyshire’s Annual General Meeting takes place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 27th March 2013.
Promotion, a trophy for the first time since 1993, a modest profit and the signing of Shivnarine Chanderpaul will doubtless have occupied the minds of Members ahead of the meeting, but it is the Special General Meeting (SGM) that follows which will be of huge significance both internally and externally in relation to the way our Club is governed in the future.
For a month, Members have been voting on a proposal that, if approved by the requisite percentage of those who vote, will make the most significant changes to who runs our Club, and how it is run, since our formation in 1870, since when the General Committee has consisted of Members without any defined role, qualifications or responsibilities. The earliest records available show that Derbyshire was traditionally governed by a committee of over 20 people, and even as recently as the 1970s there were 27 Members on the committee.
The ballot closes at 5pm on Tuesday 26th March 2013, so there remains an opportunity for anyone who has still to vote to do so.
ECB and the BBC today announced a new broadcast partnership for county cricket, with live ball-by-ball commentary of every LV=County Championship match available throughout the season, plus all Yorkshire Bank 40 and Friends Life t20 matches.
Starting with the opening of the LV=County Championship (10 April 2013) the commentaries will broadcast via BBC online streams, which will be hosted on the BBC Sport website and promoted on BBC Local Radio websites, the ECB website and county cricket websites.
To support the new streams, the BBC Sport website has updated the design of all of its ‘county cricket’ pages, which will provide easy access to the live commentaries as they happen. The county cricket page will link to the scorecards for each game and feature the best interviews and audio highlights gathered from the network of BBC commentators and correspondents around the country. The page will also link to external county cricket sites.
