First for Footitt as Falcons win in Holland
Date Posted: 30-07-2010

Mark Footitt broke his List A duck in style at Schiedam today as Derbyshire beat the Netherlands by seven wickets.

The 24-year-old fast bowler has waited nine years for his maiden wicket in one-day cricket since making his debut in 2001.

And after wrestling the monkey from his back by trapping Cooper lbw, Footitt went on to record fine figures of 3 for 27 as the home side faltered to 181 for 9 from their 40 overs.

Steffan Jones matched Footitt’s figures, including the crucial wicket of Michael Dighton for 16, before Chesney Hughes spearheaded the successful chase with a career best 72.

The burly Anguillan faced 113 balls in his innings, somewhat circumspect baring in mind his powerful reputation.

But having watched the Netherlands collapse to 89 for 5 before Mudassar Bukhari bailed them out of trouble with an exhilarating 69 off just 52 deliveries, Hughes wasn’t going to let the same thing happen to the Falcons.

Chris Rogers scored 56 off 67 balls in an opening stand of 111 with Hughes. And although Greg Smith (12) didn’t fire at number three, Wes Durston (12 not out) gave Hughes a partner while 45 runs were added for the third wicket to take Derbyshire to within two of victory.

Hughes was run out on the brink of the finish line leaving Wayne Madsen to hit the winning runs with three overs to spare.
