Profile:
South African born all-rounder Greg Smith became a regular in the Derbyshire side in 2007 after playing a bit-part role the previous year.
He scored a rapid 79 against Leicestershire in the Twenty20 Cup that year, closely followed by a scintillating 88 from just 68 balls in the NatWest Pro40 League against Kent Spitfires.
With the ball, Smith is equally at home bowling off-spin and medium-pace and his versatility has been used to good effect in all forms of the game.
Smith took the man of the match award in the Phantoms' Friends Provident Trophy victory over Scotland in June 2007 after opening the bowling and ripping out the Saltires top-order with his medium-pace.
Just over a month later, Simon Katich threw the ball to his all-rounder in very different circumstances in an LV County Championship game against Middlesex.
Middlesex were 208 for four chasing 281 to win when Smith came on to bowl his off-spin on the final afternoon. He won the game for his side with figures of 3 for 31 from 15 outstanding overs.
The year 2008 then saw Smith's game develop with the bat from flashes of good form to far more consistent performances.
Working hard on curbing his natural aggresson and concentrating on building a long innings, Smith scored six first-class half-centuries as well as notching his maiden century in the home victory over Middlesex in August.
He sustained a first-class average of 33.25 in 13 appearances as well as continuing to impress with his dynamic fielding and becoming the first Derbyshire player to score a Twenty20 century – 100 not out off 62 balls against Yorkshire at Headingley Carnegie.
The improvement continued in 2009 as Smith produced 977 first-class runs at an average of 42.47, including six half-centuries and a fine 126 against Gloucestershire.
Smith’s bowling also played a far more central role in 2009 with 32 first-class wickets coming at an average of 34.31, including a maiden five wicket haul as Derbyshire chased victory in vain against Middlesex at Uxbridge.
Notable performances in the limited-overs arena included a career-best spell of 4 for 53 in the Friends Provident Trophy match against Lancashire Lightning and a rapid 77, from just 52 balls, to set up a NatWest Pro40 victory over Surrey.
